Photography
began as a hobby for David, he has had no formal training as a photographer,
but learned the craft from books and magazines, and most of all in
the field. His love of the countryside and of the art of photography
meant that when the opportunity arose he took the chance to become
a full time professional landscape photographer. The opportunity
only arose of course because despite the lack of formal training
David’s work amply demonstrated not just a technical mastery
of the craft, but also a love of the subject. David’s work
has been in demand from calendar and card publishers, for magazines
and books for many years.
David has always sought those moments when
the light and land come together and create an unrepeatable moment,
that special harmony
that is best appreciated in photography, because only a traditional
photograph proves the truth of the moment. Both the grand vista
and tiny details of texture and form appeal to David. The aim is
to create images that capture the emotion of the moment. Many people
enjoy visiting the countryside and feel relaxed and revived by
it. People have described David’s work as relaxing and reviving
to look at, something the viewer can drift into for a short while
and enjoy. The exquisite detail captured by a large format camera
means David’s pictures are like being there just for a moment,
by the side of a still lake, or on the beach as the sun sets.
In the past ten years David has become
something of a guru of landscape photography. Writing extensively
for photographic magazines.
His first book on landscape photography. (Photographing water in
the landscape published by the photographers institute press) is
a fine showcase for David’s work as well as an instruction
manual of technique and style. David has always sought ways in
which to pass on any knowledge he has gained about the art and
craft of photography. The latest venture he has undertaken in this
regard is the workshops program.
